What’s the Social Issue?

Due to documentation issues, extreme poverty, and their remote locations, vulnerable children in Sabah are exploited for labour and face limited to no access to education.

The Challenge

To ensure vulnerable children in Sabah have access to education and are protected from exploitation, despite longstanding systemic challenges.

What We Did

In addition to supporting programme execution and the preparation of a situational analysis,

Ratio:Cause oversaw the invitation and coordination of multiple agencies including government and union representatives, plantation business owners, informal education providers, CSOs, community and alternative learning centres, as well as relevant international bodies.

What are the immediate outcomes after the programme?

This programme successfully delivered a foundational situational analysis

and gathered key stakeholder input and recommendations regarding child labour and education access in Sabah's plantation communities.

The above mentioned evidence base is being to guide ILO's future planning

and to shape the next phase of the programme.
